HOW TO APPLY

To study in Canada, you must:

  • Be enrolled at a designated learning institution (DLI). A DLI is a school that has been approved by the Canadian government to accept international students.
  • Prove you have enough money to pay for your tuition fees, living expenses, and return transportation. The amount of money you need will vary depending on the province or territory where you plan to study and the length of your program.
  • Obey the law, have no criminal record, and get a police certificate (if required).
  • Be in good health and get a medical exam (if required).
  • Prove to an officer that you will leave Canada when your study permit expires.

There are a few additional requirements for certain groups of people, such as minors and family members of Canadian citizens or permanent residents. You can find more information about these requirements on the website of Immigration, Refugees and Citizenship Canada (IRCC).

Who is eligible to apply for a study permit from inside Canada?

Only some people can apply for a study permit from inside Canada. These include:

  • Ukrainian nationals and family members of Ukrainian nationals
  • People with a valid study or work permit
  • Spouses, common-law partners, or parents of people with a valid study or work permit
  • Minor children in primary or secondary school
  • Exchange or visiting students
  • People who completed a short-term course or study program required to be accepted at a DLI
  • People or their spouses, common-law partners, or dependent children who have a temporary resident permit (TRP) valid for 6 months or more
  • Spouses, common-law partners, or dependent children of athletes on a team based in Canada, members of the media, members of the clergy, military personnel on duty in Canada, or accredited foreign representatives

If you are not eligible to apply for a study permit from inside Canada, you must apply from outside Canada and obtain the permit before coming to Canada.

Is there an age limit to study in Canada?

There is no specific age limit to study in Canada. However, there are a few factors to keep in mind. For example, minors (under the age of 18) must have a parent or guardian in Canada to care for them. Also, some schools may have their own age requirements for admission.

If you have any questions about whether you are eligible to study in Canada, you can contact IRCC.
