EXTENDING STAY

Extending your stay in Canada for studies

To extend your stay in Canada for studies, you must apply for an extension of your study permit. You can apply online or by mail.

When to apply

You should apply to extend your study permit at least 30 days before your current permit expires. This will give you enough time to receive your new permit before your current one expires. If you apply after your permit expires, you will be considered out of status and may not be able to continue studying in Canada until your status is restored.

How to apply

To apply for an extension of your study permit, you will need to:

  • Create an account or sign in to your existing account on the IRCC website.
  • Complete the online application form.
  • Pay the application fee.
  • Submit your application and any supporting documents.
  • Supporting documents

You will need to submit the following supporting documents with your application:

  • A copy of your current study permit.
  • A letter of acceptance from your designated learning institution (DLI).
  • Proof of financial support.
  • A copy of your passport.
  • A copy of your medical exam results (if required).
  • A copy of your police certificate (if required).
  • Processing times

The processing time for applications to extend a study permit can vary depending on the time of year and the complexity of your application. However, you can expect to wait at least a few weeks for a decision.

What happens if your application is approved

If your application to extend your study permit is approved, you will receive a new study permit in the mail. Your new permit will be valid for the length of your remaining study program, plus 90 days.

What happens if your application is denied

If your application to extend your study permit is denied, you will receive a letter explaining the reasons for the denial. You will have the opportunity to appeal the decision if you believe that it was made in error.
